چکیده

Abstract Palm oil mill effluent (POME) contains very high organic compounds that must be treated before being discharged into the environment. Pond technology has been widely used for treatment of POME; however, it requires a huge area land. Down-flow hanging sponge (DHS) reactor shown pollutant removal efficiency, less energy, and land requirement. This study aimed to investigate performance series anaerobic (R3) aerobic (R4) DHS reactors in treating POME. The was continuously supplied with POME three different phases 165 days. COD loading rate set at 3.06, 6.12, 12.24 kg-COD/m³·day Phase 1, 2, 3, respectively. Hydraulic retention time (HRT) 47 min 50 min, R3 R4, showed good especially COD. In average 2.68 0.27 kg-COD/m³·d when increased, achieved 4.12 1.53 doubled 5.81 2.90 During operation, concentration nitrate fluctuated which indicated nitrification had occurred. Phosphate could reduced R3, but only small portion removed R4. Total suspended solids (TSS) effectively These results revealed combination anaerobic-aerobic removing pollutants such as TSS. Therefore, can polishing

A Review of Palm Oil Mill Effluent (Pome) Water Treatment

Palm oil is one of the two most important vegetable oils in the world’s oil and fats market. The extraction and purification processes generate different kinds of waste generally known as palm oil mill effluent (POME). The environmental impact of POME cannot be over emphasized; hence the need for treatment measures to reduce these impacts before discharge. Therefore, this paper reviews the proc...

The Performance Evaluation of Anaerobic Methods for Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) Treatment: A Review

Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is an important source of inland water pollution when released into local rivers or lakes without treatment. In the process of palm oil milling, POME is generat‐ ed through sterilization of fresh oil palm fruit bunches, clarification of palm oil and effluent from hydro-cyclone operations [Borja et al.,1996a]. POME is a viscous brown liquid with fine suspended solid...

Anaerobic Treatment of Palm Oil Mill Effluent in Pilot-Scale Anaerobic EGSB Reactor

Large volumes of untreated palm oil mill effluent (POME) pose threat to aquatic environment due to the presence of very high organic content. The present investigation involved two pilot-scale anaerobic expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactors, continuously operated for 1 year to treat POME. Setting HRT at 9.8 d, the anaerobic EGSB reactors reduced COD from 71179 mg/L to 12341 mg/L and recy...

Pretreated Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) Digestion in an Up-Flow Anaerobic Sludge Fixed Film Bioreactor: a Comparative Study

An up-flow anaerobic sludge fixed film (UASFF) bioreactor was used to treat the pretreated palm oil mill effluent (POME). In physical pretreatment, POME was pre-settled for 2 h and the supernatant was fed into the reactor. In chemical pretreatment, optimum dosages of cationic and anionic polymers were used. Experiments of pretreated POME digestion were conducted based on a central composite fac...
